Pre-Doctoral Course

  • The undergraduate course/curriculum provides a thorough knowledge about the basics of the subject including the care and management of the patient, under the guidelines laid by the Dental Council of India.
  • The undergraduate training programme commences in the 3rd year with lectures and practical exercises and continues to final year 2nd term which constitutes a total of 80 lecture hours and 170 clinics hours.
  • The undergraduate program in periodontology and implantology are prepared keeping in view the guidelines prescribed by Rajasthan University of Health Sciences and the entire curriculum is based on an objective
    • To acquire knowledge and understanding of the aetiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis &treatment planning of various periodontal problems.
    • To have understood the periodontal surgical principles like pre and post-surgical management of periodontal diseases.
    • Essential knowledge of personal hygiene and infection control, prevention of cross infection and safe disposal of hospital waste keeping in view the high prevalence of infectious disease
    • To obtain proper clinical history, examination of the patient, perform diagnostic procedures and order essential laboratory tests and interpret them and to arrive at a provisional diagnosis about the periodontal condition.
    • To perform with competence various periodontal nonsurgical procedures.
    • Develop adequate communication skills particularly with the patients giving them the various options available to manage a particular periodontal problem and obtain a true informed consent from them for the most appropriate treatment available.
  • They are clinically exposed to high number of patients and are trained to provide the basic non-surgical procedures.

Post-Graduate Course

THREE YEAR POSTGRADUATES PROGRAMME

In recent years Periodontics has assumed enoromous clinical relevance and importance. Advances in material sciences, microbiological breakthroughs and technical refinement, have made Periodontics an alluring and challenging specialty. The graduate program of 3 years in Periodontics leading to award of MDS degree by RajasthanUniversity of Health Sciences aims at inculcating a scientific temper, learn new surgical crafts and hone pedagogy skills. A well trained graduate student should later be able to do independent research and also appreciate, assimilate and transform research to real-life clinical situations.

The following is the postgraduates program in Periodontology & Oral Implantology for the Master of Dental Surgery Course (3 Years) prepared keeping in view the guidelines prescribed by the RUHS and also the Dental Council of India. The entire postgraduates program will be divided in 6 blocks. The first block will be of 5 months duration followed by the second block of 6 months duration, third block of 6 months duration, fourth block of 7 months, fifth block of 8 months duration and the sixth block of 2 months. Unless a postgraduate student fulfills the criteria laid down in each block he/she will not be allowed to progress to the next block.

May – October (5 months)

  • Basic Principles of “Instrumentation & Sharpening and Periodontal Instrumentarium”.
  • 30 Completed hand scaling including Supra & Sub-Gingival Scaling and root planing with pre-and post-operative Photographs and recordings of the changes noticed.
  • 20 ultrasonic scaling including Supra-Subgingival scaling
  • Practice of Maintenance and Supportive Periodontal Therapy.
  • Discuss 10 articles of relevance to basic sciences and periodontics
  • 5 seminar topics to be presented.
  • 2 case histories discussed and signed with pre-and-post-operative photographs, radiographs and study models.
  • Completion of the certificate course in Computer application.
  • Performance Evaluation I in the first week of December. This includes viva-voce.
  • For the performance evaluation, the students are required to be through in the knowledge of applied subjects, i.e., applied General Anatomy, applied General Physiology and Biochemistry, applied General Pathology. In addition to this a sound knowledge of the periodontal clinical topics from the prescribed textbooks is a must.

November - May (6 months)

  • Selection and submission of Library Dissertation.
  • Knowledge of different Epidemiological indices. Should record at least 5 cases of each index with discussion and proper records. [Maintain separate notebook
  • 6 seminar topics to be presented.
  • 20 important journal articles to be discussed.
  • 10 case histories discussed and signed with pre-and post-operative photographs, radiographs and study models with 2 year recall.
  • Appropriate laboratory training in Histopathological and Microbiological aspects of periodontal disease.
  • Basic Principles of Implantology.

June -November (6 months)

  • 6 seminar topics to be presented.
  • 20 important journal articles to be discussed.
  • 6 case histories discussed and signed with pre-and post-operative photographs, and study models.
  • Selection of the topic for the Main Dissertation, submission of the synopsis and planning for the Pilot study.
  • Performing the entire relevant clinical task as mentioned in the work schedule emphasizing more on different surgical and non-surgical techniques.
  • X-ray interpretation of different periodontal conditions.
  • Performance Evaluation III in the first week of March, which includes theory and viva-voce ( this is an internal evaluation process ).
  • For the performance evaluation, the student required to be thorough in the knowledge of the Biostatistics including, Periodontal Epidemiology. In addition to this a sound knowledge of the basic periodontal topics from the prescribed textbooks is a must.
  • Suturing technique on a model should be submitted at the end of III rd block.

December – June (7 months)

  • 7 seminar topics to be presented.
  • 20 important journal articles to be discussed.
  • 10 case histories discussed and signed with pre-and post-operative photographs, radiographs and study models.
  • Reference cards of important journal articles to be prepared.
  • Performing the entire relevant clinical task as mentioned in the work schedule emphasizing more on Interdisciplinary Approaches.
  • Presentation of a scientific paper in a National Conference.
  • Publication of scientific articles in a relevant journal.
  • Performance evaluation infirst week ofJuly which includes theory and viva-voce (This is an internal evaluation process)
  • For performance Evaluation, the student is required to be thorough in the knowledge of Periodontal Diagnosis and all treatment modalities, including peri-implant therapy and aesthetics.

July – February (8 months)

  • 6 seminar topics to be presented.
  • 20 important journal articles to be discussed.
  • 10 case histories discussed and signed with pre-and post-operative photographs, radiographs and study.
  • Submission of the Main Dissertation after due approval and along with the preparation of slides and manuscript in international format of reporting
  • Prepare a lecture for the undergraduate students on the allotted topics. Engage the students in tutorials as and when required.
  • Performing the entire relevant clinical task as mentioned in the work schedule emphasizing more on advanced surgical procedures like Mucogingival surgeries, GTR, Bone grafts etc.
  • Follow –up records of case history cases should be submitted with proper recall assessment duly completed.
  • Hands on table demonstration of Implant systems and initiation of clinical cases of Implantology, Presurgical, Diagnostic treatment plan procedures and insertion of implant.
  • Performance Evaluation V in the first week of March which includes theory and viva-voce ( This is an internal evaluation process).
  • For performance evaluation, the students are required to be thorough in the knowledge of Periodontal Diagnosis and treatment modalities, including Implantology, plastic surgeries, Regenerative and Resective surgical modalities.

March –April (2 months)

Students in this block are advised to thoroughly review and revise their theoretical knowledge in order to prepare themselves for the Mock examinations, which will include theory, viva voce and clinical examinations.
